Happy Mother’s Day!


It’s Mother’s Day in the U.S., and what better way to celebrate than with a clip from our short film “Silly Old Birds,” which focuses on the maternal complexities of the avian world.

I animated this entirely in Toon Boom Animate Pro on a Samsung Series 7 Slate, mostly while riding a high-speed train through the British countryside. As far as I can tell, I’m the only person who can say that, but if anyone else does the same thing I would LOVE to hear about it!

To all of the mothers out there, God bless you! To my own dear mother, thank you! And to my dear, sweet wife, who will become a mother to our second child this year, I love you!

Strength In Numbers


When I started The Independent Animator nearly a year and a half ago, I began with the belief that the animation industry should no longer rely on the antiquated systems of the traditional animation studio. Instead, animators should take charge of their own destiny, join together for collaborative projects, share work and profits, utilise the technology already available (most of it free!) to allow remote working–thereby increasing profit margins while offering consistent quality to clients, not to mention drastically improving the quality of life for the animator–and, most importantly, create content that truly matters.

Today, I am able to deliver large amounts of animated content to any client in the world using this method, collaborating with my network of independent animators, artists, voice actors, and composers, who are geographically dispersed across five continents. This is far more than I ever would have been able to do under the old studio system. There is no doubt in my mind: this is the future of our industry.

Jason Tammemagi Proves Me Wrong About The iPad

Recently, I wrote a post describing the Apple iPad as “useless” for artists. Well, it turns out that I was wrong. There are a number of professional artists using the iPad for artwork in a variety of ways, and animation director Jason Tammemagi is one of them. Jason was kind enough to describe his workflow in an email to me, which you can read below. While Jason’s style is certainly different than my own, I think we can all agree that he obtains fantastic results from this simplified process!
